Interactive Data Vis
May 07, 2015
I've wanted to learn D3 for a while now, so for Special Topics this quarter I decided to devote a couple of weeks to gain some basic understanding of what D3 is and how to use it. To make it easier for me to find data to use I picked a theme: wine. I ended up creating two separate visualizations: a wine aroma wheel and a wine consumption map:
Project 1: Wine Aroma Wheel
Sunburst charts are great charts to visualize hierarchical data, with each piece nested in concentric circles. Aroma wheels are classic examples of these types of charts. There are a lot of great D3 examples using sunbursts so I decided to transform a typical wine aroma wheel into a zoomable sunburst!
The trickiest part of making this was getting the JSON file just right. Any stray punctuation will completely break the file, so running it through any sort of lint is essential.

Project 2: Litres of Wine Consumed per Capita in 2013
I knew I wanted to explore maps so keeping with the wine theme, I found The States That Love Wine The Most and decided to use it as the basis for an interactive map using color to convey the litres of wine consumed per capita.
I used DataMaps to generate the map and utilized a rather un-elegant solution for generating color, but it works! The color scale works in tints from dark to light representing more consumption per capita to less.
