Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Reading Companion
March 23, 2015
Hailed by Nancy Pearl as one of the best summer reads of 2014, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is the debut novel of David Shafer that trails the converging timelines of three seemingly random people as they uncover the dark side of social media and big data.
A great and emerging read, the book features numerous twists and turns, secret organizations, aliases, and alter egos. In order to make the book a more enjoyable read, I wanted to eliminate some of the confusion a reader might have while reading the book in regards to relationships between entities within the book. The Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Reading Companion is an interactive directory of characters, events, timelines, and organizations. Users can download the app and configure their reading settings for a customized reading experience that helps immerse them in the story.
In order to organize all the elements and to map relevant relationships between them, I formed a mind map as I read the book.
Organizing the App
Making sure that the elements in the app are organized and grouped together was the number one priority in creating this app. Places, characters ("Phone Book"), networks, and "Dear Diary" items can all have multiple relationships with other items. Timelines are a unique part of the app. This section pulls places, characters, and "Dear Diary" elements to create a dynamically updated timeline of events for each character that gets more detailed as the book progresses.
The app is branded with the colors (blue and yellow) and typography (Avenir Black) from the book cover. This task flow covers setting the app up with your Amazon Kindle e-reader and checking out a character. Additional characters, timelines, and plot points will unlock as you read through the up.
