In recent years, gaming journalism has come under scrutiny due to a couple of very public and highly publicized instances of corruption in the gaming industry including review embargoes, censorship in reviews, and paid advertisements. This tied in perfectly with a WordPress development course focused on creating an online journal. I decided to focus on the gaming industry and dig a little dipper into what factors can help promote a trustworthy relationship between consumers and media vendors.
Research & Synthesis
In order to understand my audience, I conducted in-person interviews and circulated a survey to a variety of gaming enthusiasts. Most participants expressed preference for sites that include differences in perspectives on games (usually via a community-based element) to help ensure authenticity of reviews.
I also reviewed a mass sweep of academic literature and quantitative studies focused on gamers as a whole and uncovered some interesting tidbits, including that women represent about half of the gaming population.
In order to better understand the mindset of potential site users, I transformed the factoids I uncovered in my research to develop a diverse set of personas.
These personas condense the psychographic and demographic data I learned in my research for reference and validation during the design process.
The three most important tasks I focused on were reading news, reviews, and feature articles.
The customer journey map exercise helped identify areas in the design that could help alleviate frustrations for users. (For example, grouping review information together in a separate area can be easily skimmed.)
